Book Review: Surprised by Oxford

After reading several reviews by my favorite bloggers and authors, I requested a review copy of Surprised by Oxford.
It is a beautifully written memoir by Carolyn Webber, who heads to England to pursue graduate study at the famed Oxford University on a full scholarship. The memoir is easy to read and elegant in prose, gliding us along on her journey as she begins contemplating the existence of God.
She begins wrestling with questions that are stirred in her own mind, but also brought about by fellow students, professors and her engagement of scripture. It is amazing to watch her faith develop as she comes to an understanding of the depth of God's love for her.
Her descriptions of events, places and conversations are pure and sucked me right in. It made me want to sit and have dinner with her and her acquaintances, or visit the famed Oxford University. While many digressed that the book was too long I found myself wanting more. She is an extremely intelligent individual (don't you have to be to study at Oxford?) and a careful thinker.
Some books drag you on wanting you to join the conversation, Surprised by Oxford is simply a joy to read, and one that bucks the trend of boring memoirs.
I'm fascinated by people, especially people much smarter than myself, and Surprised by Oxford gave me a glimpse into the life that I myself would never be able to live. The academic world is not one in which I would survive, and it was fitting to watch as the author not only squirmed from the experience, but made others squirm as well.
She is a fantastic storyteller and I celebrate the fact that she invited us to read along with her on her adventures. She has since resigned from teaching and is focusing on writing and being a mother. I can't wait to read more from her!
Definitely recommend reading this gem!
